Auto Body Repair: A Quick Look at Industry Vocabulary Terms
At Magic Touch Paint and Body, we take pride in making sure that our customers fully understand the repair process that they're paying for. To more fully understand auto body repairs, it's important to be familiar with terminology used in the industry. Here's a brief overview of auto body repair vocabulary.
Corrosion
You've heard that corrosion is bad, but what actually is corrosion? In short, it's what occurs when refined metals convert to oxide, hydroxide, sulfide, or carbonite. Corrosion is most relevant to body shops when it appears in the form of rust. Anytime you notice rust on a vehicle, it's important to address it quickly so that it doesn't get the chance to become more widespread and cause more costly problems.
DRP
DRP stands for Direct Repair Program, which is the terms of agreement between an auto body shop and insurance company regarding issues like billing and repair.
LKQ
LKQ stands for Like Kind & Quality. LKQ parts have been salvaged from other vehicles and are considered up to standard for use during the repair process. LKQ parts have been thoroughly examined to make sure they're safe.
OEM Parts
OEM is short for original equipment manufacturer. OEM parts are the same as those originally made by the manufacturer, using the same materials and specifications. This makes them a popular option when parts need to be replaced.
Putty
For minor auto body damage, putty is often used. Putty is a polyester product used to smoothen a damaged area on the vehicle's surface. After putty is applied, primer and finish paint will be used to complete the repairs.
